Note on the usage of race and ethnicity data within WHI: WHI originally collected information on race and ethnicity in a single question on Form 2 at screening. In 2003-2004, Form 41 was administered to all CT and OS participants asking separately about race and ethnicity using questions modeled after the year 2000 Census Bureau categories. This Form 41 data, combined with Form 2 data where missing, was used to create imputed race and ethnicity variables (see Form 41 Imputed Race and Ethnicity dataset, 41_imputed_ctos_inv.dat and data dictionary). The WHI Race and Ethnicity Task Force recommends this imputed data should be used in all WHI analyses and papers. To align with this recommendation, the Form 2 race/ethnicity variable (RACE, data dictionary) has been removed from the WHI Investigator datasets. Requests for access to this original RACE variable (with scientific justification) can be addressed to the WHI Help Desk (helpdesk@whi.org). To learn more about the WHI Race and Ethnicity Task Force recommendations see here (https://www.whi.org/doc/WHI-Race-and-Ethnicity-Language-and-Data-Interpretation-Guide.pdf) and here (https://www.whi.org/doc/WHI-Race-and-Ethnicity-Language-and-Data-Interpretation-Guide-Summary-for-Analysts.pdf). You can find a comparison of the Form 41 imputed race/ethnicity data to the baseline race/ethnicity data (on Form 2) in the August 2004 Semi-Annual Progress Report, pages 7-1 to 7-4.

How would you describe your racial or ethnic group? If you are of mixed blood, which group do you identify with most?

Usage Notes:

The Form 2 race/ethnicity variable has been removed from the WHI Investigator datasets to align with recommendations from the WHI Race and Ethnicity Task Force. Please use the imputed race and ethnicity variables found in the Form 41 Imputed Race and Ethnicity dataset (data dictionary) instead. See the WHI data prep document for more detail. Requests for access to this original RACE variable (with scientific justification) can be addressed to the WHI Help Desk (helpdesk@whi.org).
