Tatting
Tatting is an old lace-making art from the Middle Ages. It has been called "knotting," "eye" (Italian), "tattie" (Indian), "tat" (English), and "makouk" (Eastern countries). It apparently developed in several parts of the world--China to Holland to England. The shuttle used by the daughter of Luis XV was made of steel with a monogram of flowers. An early poetical reference to tatting is found in Sir Charles Sedley's "The Royal Knotter," written in 1707, in which appears, "For here's a Queen now thanks to God: Who when she rides in a coach abroad, Is always knotting threads."
