She was born a slave named Isabela. When she was emancipated at the age of forty, she chose the name Sojourner Truth to describe her mission as a a traveling preacher. Speaking at religious revival meetings in the New England area, she soon gained recognition fort her forceful presence and fiery lectures. Many of the leading abolitionists and women's rights activists of the time ref3eived her support and counted her as a friend. Sojourner was a gifted orator who was not afraid to speak before and unfriendly crowd. Her famous speech, "Ain't' I a Woman?" brought the house down and a Women's Rights Convention in 1851, and copies were widely distributed. In her later years, Sojourner traveled all over the Untied States, spoke before Congress, and met two presidents.
