For Joyce; Calla Lilies
I made this quilt block in honor of my friend for over 50 years, who passed away in 2002, of cancer at the age of 69. I chose a Calla Lily design, because she and I both adored Katherine Hepburn. She always likened me to her because I too, was from New England, and had much the same outspoken ways. She made a pillow with Calla Lilies on it, which we presented to Miss Hepburn many years ago in San Francisco. Joyce B., my dearest and most remarkable woman in my life, was blessed with the most beautiful voice ever given to one woman. She sang gospel music, and performed at many churches, community activities and Mother's for Peace. My life will never be the same without her, and many years ago I asked her if she would sing at my funeral . A part of me died with her, but her memory will never die for those who were lucky enough to be part of her world.
